The Brown Club of Houston and the Brown Women's Network invite you to a discussion with Brown alumna, Debbie Lum '91, about her documentary, Try Harder!

Debbie will discuss her journey as a filmmaker and what brought her to highlight the lives of students at Lowell High School as they go through the bruising process of college admissions.

The film is honest, genuine, and illuminating. It gives her subjects an opportunity to share their dreams and anxieties. This is a great film and I hope you will get a chance to watch it.

Try Harder! is available for viewing to all registered participants courtesy of the filmmaker. Once you have registered, a link to view the film will be sent to you. It is also available at pbs.org and tryharderfilm.com/watch.

In order to spotlight mental health and wellness of young adults, we are collecting $10 per registrant. All ticket proceeds from this event will go to the Try Harder! impact campaign (see below) and Brown Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS).

The impact campaign for Try Harder! re-centers students at the heart of the college admission process and promotes positive mental health. We work with students, families, teachers, counselors, and gatekeepers to promote student agency within a diverse education ecosystem. We share tools that can help students, parents, and educators cope in high-pressure environments.

During this time of escalating anti-Asian violence, there is a dire need to listen to AAPI youth voices and raise the visibility of their stories. Through ongoing grassroots screenings and engaging community conversations, the film's impact campaign seeks to dismantle stereotypes facing AAPI students as well as chip away at the opportunity gap faced by Black, LatinX, and indigenous students.

We invite you to share your questions in advance of the program by emailing them using the 'Contact Organizer' button.

A Zoom link will be sent to registrants closer to the event date.
