An ill-fated artist, an Ambassador's wife, a Baroness, and the most powerful woman in journalism: What do they have in common? They were all part of the most exclusive club of power-players in Cold War-era Washington, DC, and made their mark in a "man's world" using every tool at their disposal.
In honour of Women’s History Month, join BCDC for an engaging and informative walking tour to unpack this hidden history on the streets of historic Georgetown. We'll be guided by Katie Kirkpatrick, the founder of Off the Mall Tours , a woman-owned company known for showcasing the lesser-known annals of DC.
The group will meet outside the iconic ice cream parlor Thomas Sweet on Wisconsin Avenue, and stop at six locations within a mile-long radius. At our final stop, Martin's Tavern (the iconic Georgetown standby where JFK proposed to Jackie), we'll gather to discuss we've learned over light refreshments and snacks.
Wear comfortable walking shoes! In case of severe inclement weather, we'll postpone for a later date. Please view BCDC's current events policy before registering.
Space is limited (and our last walking tour sold out), so secure your spot today! Tickets include the tour and one soft drink and an appetizer at Martin's from a custom-for-BCDC menu. Non-alumni friends, family members, and colleagues are warmly welcomed to join.
About our Tour Guide
Katie Kirkpatrick is proud to call herself a DC resident since 2002. She moved to the capital to attend graduate school, and then worked in government for many years. However, history was always her first love. She started her touring career by giving historical ghost tour pub crawls, and discovered a passion for sharing the varied and layered history of the capital area. Katie founded Off the Mall Tours in 2020, drawing upon her interest in unique stories, a love of unique history, and a flair for costuming. The mission of Off the Mall Tours is to introduce local DC residents and visitors alike to the under-represented history of Washington, including its varied neighborhoods and communities.
