About our speaker: Mariah Calagione '93

What’s in the water in Delaware? It must be something special, because between Mariah Calagione’s roots in Milford and the Dogfish Head HQ, the state has churned out some of the best beer (and people) in recent memory.

While Mariah is one half of the brewing superteam behind Dogfish Head with her husband Sam, it’s her community and social impact that tends to catch the eye. After studying public policy at Brown, she briefly worked in local television before coming on full-time at Dogfish. Much of her work over the past 20 years has been putting that public policy experience to work, including a 10-year stint on the board of the Nature Conservancy (which Dogfish programs still advocate for) and numerous school boards. Now, as part of Boston Beer, Mariah works across all locations and brands to ensure our impact on local communities is a positive one and that we do our best to make the world a better place to have a beer in.

Beyond her writing chops – she co-authored “The Dogfish Head Book”, out now – and passion for travel, Mariah loves a good Peloton ride and finding new places to eat and drink.

About our host: Dave Chandrasekaran '01

Dave Chandrasekaran (Class of '01) has been involved in community-centered policy and advocacy at the federal, state and local levels ever since Commencement Day. Starting with an AmeriCorps Fellowship in Massachusetts, his career has focused on access to care for low-income families, voting rights, gender-based violence, human trafficking, criminal justice reform and other efforts to combat inequity. To stay sane though, he's also dedicated considerable energy towards creative outlets, including organizing music and cultural events featuring local artists of color and helping to open Smitty's, a small Black-owened neighborhood bar and restaurant in Park View, DC.

He currently serves as the Executive Director of the Voter Empowerment Project (VEP), which provides pro bono technical assistance to small, under-resourced frontline organizations working to increase voter turnout in historically disadvantaged communities. Through a network of volunteer students and professionals from across the country (including Brown undergrads!), VEP offers free help with communications, data analysis, graphic design, video production, social media strategy, website design, volunteer recruitment, and more.

VEP began in fall 2019, inspired by a canvassing conversation with an older Black South Philadelphia resident in 2016. He explained that his reticence to vote was because “you people come here every four years, yell at us to ‘go vote’ and then leave ‘cause you don’t give a damn about us.” VEP is actively recruiting volunteers for 2023 service (sign up here!), along with interns and student fellows for the Summer semester.  You can also support our work by making a tax-deduction donation today!  To learn more, visit www.voterempowerment.org.
