Join us on May 8, 2023, as we bring together four remarkable women physicians who have faced and conquered the challenges of being a woman in medicine. This panel discussion will cover the historic struggles women faced being accepted into medical schools, and the progress made since then.
Our distinguished panelists, Kathleen M. McCarten, M.D. ‘66, Santina Siena, M.D. ‘73, Simone Thavaseelan, M.D., and Liza Aguiar, M.D. ‘04, will share their unique experiences and insights into the challenges women face in the medical field. They will discuss the difficulties of being a surgeon with young families, becoming administrators, and publishers.
Kathleen M. McCarten, M.D. ‘66, has an extensive background in pediatric radiology. She will share her journey as a woman in medicine from the 1960s to the present day. Kathleen attended Pembroke College for her undergrad (before it was merged with Brown) and the Woman's Medical School of Pennsylvania (now Drexel Medical School) for medical school. She completed her internship and radiology residency at Ann Arbor, Michigan, and a fellowship in pediatric radiology at Boston Children's. Kathleen currently holds the position of Professor Emerita Diagnostic Imaging and Pediatrics at Brown University.
Santina Siena, M.D. ‘73, specializes in obstetrics and gynecology. She will bring the challenges of being a woman in this field to light. Santina completed her undergrad at Brown University, majoring in Biology. She then attended Weill Cornell Medical College for medical school, completed her internship in internal medicine at Rush Presbyterian - St. Luke’s, and her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at New York Hospital – Cornell Medical Center. Santina currently holds the position of Clinical Assistant Professor Emerita in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Brown University.
Simone Thavaseelan, M.D., is an Associate Professor of Urology at Brown and Residency program director for Brown Urology. She will share her experiences in the field of urology. Simone completed her undergrad at Georgetown University and attended Georgetown School of Medicine for medical school. She completed her residency in urology at RIH, Miriam, and VA Hospitals and a fellowship in minimally invasive endourology. Simone currently holds the Section Chief of Urology position at the VA Medical Center.
Liza Aguiar, M.D. ‘04, will discuss her path to becoming Assistant Dean PLME program at the Warren Alpert Medical School. Liza completed her undergrad and medical school at Brown University. She completed her residency in urology at RIH, Miriam, and VA Hospitals and a fellowship in pediatric urology at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, Hartford, CT. Liza holds the Assistant Professor of Urology and Pediatrics position at Brown University.
