Robert Preucel, Director, and Christina Hodge, Associate Director, of Brown's Haffenreffer Museum of Anthropology, discuss the museum's change of location from Bristol to Providence and its evolving mission.
Museums are commonly in the news today, usually due to questions about their collections -- how they were acquired and how they are exhibited. There is a popular narrative that museums are staid repositories of objects preserved for posterity. However, this narrative misses how museums have long been on the move, becoming dynamic venues where communities engage with objects -- old and new -- to tell their stories.
As a leading teaching museum Brown's Haffenreffer Museum is developing a new vision that centers people over things, relationships over collections. It regards the movement of objects into and out of collections as a key component in the circulation of culture. At the same time the museum is moving physically from Bristol to Providence to make its collections more accessible to students, faculty, and the public.
